hi all,
arrived in Llandovery at 9 this morning with the intention of starting my shelter. Had a rough night so arrived knackered, start tomorrow instead will post photos soon. Spend the day figuring location,prevailing weather direction etc. Any comments or advice welcome

Have you given any thought to the site of your latrine? It must be at least 50m from a water course...this is important because you're upstream of me! :fedup::rofl::rofl::rofl: Working back from that, pitch you camp upwind of the latrine but not so far that you're tempted to go in the bushes instead.
It's also been very dry recently so if an area is normally a bit boggy or soft it may show large surface cracks, otherwise it might be a bit hard to tell until it's rained, soft ground is well worth avoiding because a little foot traffic turns it into a quagmire later in the year.
Trees are dropping branches at the moment due to the drought, take time to check out the canopy above your camp for widowmakers. Try to avoid pitching your camp under beech and wytch elm. "Elm hateth man and is patient" meaning an elm tree will almost seem like it's trying to kill you on purpose. If you post an OS grid ref we can drop in and visit. Good luck :thumbsup: shout out if you get in any bother.

dump in a doggy bag and bin in dog mess bin, 😀 I havent located exact site yet, but it will be in Poormans woods ( comes up as Dan yr Allt woods )nearest water source is the bran, approx 200m from woods. Grid Ref is :
SN 781350
E 278121 N 235019
Lat. 51.999296 Long. -3.777474

Start of with two spots...one for a long term shelter and the other for a short term until the long term is ready... that way you have somewhere to get out of the weather. This will also allow you to take your time. :thumbsup: It’s possible you already know this lol just my 2p worth :D

@wildwoodsman

Having already seen some of your handy work........I look forward to seeing your permanent shelter :thumbsup:
You have chosen a good time of the year to get established before the Winter weather sets in.

Wish you all the luck with it mate and hope you find what you are looking for:thumbsup:

I am looking for peace of mind, peace of soul, a simpler life alongside mother nature.
spent too long, and too much time trying to fit into a society to which I do not belong. I'm of the opinion I was born in the wrong century, 200 years too late!

well, complete change of plan. Location not as good as first thought, so back to Carmarthen to my original woods, and won't be on a long term basis just yet, see what happens in the future

Fitting given that in Norse mythology odin and his 2 brothers carved the first woman "Embla" (sp?) from a piece of an Elm tree. Not sure about the being patient comparison though.
