Hi everyone :)

Hope you’re all having a nice start to the week. As a lot of you know, I’m just starting out with camping and ordered a gas stove from amazon thinking it would be ideal (posted a pic) However when it’s came it’s pretty heavy. When I eventually go wild camping I would like something lighter. Do you guys have any recommendations? Obviously nothing really expensive as on a budget.

Thanks

Amanda :)

Currently I'm looking for a second hand Trangia 27 in either aluminium or stainless (not non stick) with a spirit burner, (not gas.)
That seems to be the all time favourite of many campers and bushcrafters.

Those stoves in the picture run on butane and performance is poor when temperatures are 5c or less.

The Trangia 'Storm Kocher' as Ystranc says runs on methylated spirits, is uterly reliable and perfect for the two of you, keep a look out of ebay for a used set
Trangia Family Size Aluminium Pan and Kettle set C/w Spirit Cooker | eBay

Its pronounced 'trang ee a' and includes two saucepans and lid/frypan. If your set does not come with a kettle they are about a tenner to buy.

Morning Amanda, those stoves are actually pretty decent if you keep the wind off them, I've got one up the allotment and a couple at home if the gas goes off so I wouldn't ditch it as and when you get an upgrade.

As for getting one for wild camping, there are so many options, there are uber lightweight gas ones, meths burners, gel...... it goes on. I'm a bit of a stove slut and go through phases of having a 'fave', at the moment I'm into the simple meths pots and stands, cheap and relatively simple.

At the 'top' end of the table you'll see what I'm on about, the wee three sided stand comes apart to 3 identical shapes that take up very little space. Probably best to have a decent meths container if you go down this route.

Give it 6 months and I'll be back to gas or my Coleman dual fuel or whatever.

Edit to add, there's also a smally gas stove with quite a large gas bottle, you can get smaller bottles for them too.

I've just checked, the Trangia 27-UL1 (without the kettle) is down to £38.40 at Millets if you use the discount code CAMP20. The one with the kettle is the 27-UL2 and it's a shade over £50.
You will also need a secure bottle suitable for carrying the meths.

Unless you are set on buying a gas stove and would prefer that option.........the Trangia sets are a joy to use and so worth the money.
It will last you all of your camping years with minimum maintenance and return good service.

Fairly compact and it all packs within itself......neat and tidy......another fan of this great stove here

Thank you :) I think I will go with this one as it’s pretty light considering you get the pans too :) Can you suggest the type of bottle you’re talking about for the meths (I’m guessing that’s methylated spirits)?

Amanda :)

As long as it isn't going to split or leak I doubt it matters about what bottle you use, best practice would be to mark the bottle's contents on the outside as flammable and irritant.
I was going to use this one because it's useless as a water bottle, it makes water taste weird.

Excellent choice Amanda.........hope you enjoy using it for years to come on your journeys.

Look forward to your first trip report and pictures
Have you a place in mind for your first trip?

Couldn't agree more, mine is over 30 years old and still going strong. Not used it for a while basically because I enjoy playing with other systems but it was my first 'stove love'.

The bottle the meths comes in is fine but as you can afford more go for

Trangia Fuel Bottle with Safety Valve - 1.0lt, 0.5lt, 0.3lt | eBay Trangia fuel bottle with safety pourer which makes filling your stove very easy and you get no fuel spills. They come in different sizes.

Got the half litre one and its handy. I've got another 1 Litre bottle as 'back up' to decant into the trangia bottle but I just don't get away long enough to use it. :crying:

Another one with a stove problem here. And another(very old) weakling girl
I also have a couple of the briefcase types to keep at the house for emergencies.

Since I went to the USA a few years ago, I've become a fan of Gel fuel. It's very economical, really safe and as efficient as meths. I use the chafing fuel tins, or you can buy the FireDragon gel fuel in bottles and decant into a shoe polish tin. You can use them with any stove that uses a meths burner. I've got three variations.
The first is this one. The basic folding sterno. It's been many places with me and I would never be without it. It folds flat, always a bonus when space is at a premium.

The second is the Sterno Inferno.

and the third is a litle folding type from fleabay.

They all accept either a meths burner of a chafing fuel can and they all work. These days, because they are all so light, I tend to take all 3, because I can. I also take both meths and gel fuel.

Thanks and I’m sure I will. Looks like a great bit of kit :) Yeah, going at the beginning of May just for a night to start with. Gonna go here. Looks like a good place to start :) and they do fresh eggs. Yay 😀 The Barn at Easington, Peterlee, Co. Durham

Oh and yeah, will let you all know how it goes and will take plenty of pics :)

Thanks for your advice. And I’m sure you don’t mean it the way it comes across but it makes us women sound like weaklings lol. You’ve mentioned it a few times how we are not as strong and are weaker. It’s true that women are not as strong as men, physically but it doesn’t mean we are weak. Anyway, like I said I’m sure you don’t mean it that way and appreciate your advice. I think I’m going to go for the Trangia since it’s pretty light considering you get the pans with it too. Thanks Amanda :)
It's ok, he's not met my sister, she can weild an axe like it's really meant to be used 😂😂😂 the reason that I don't already own my own Trangia is that I borrowed my sister's when I did my DofE....

That site looks ideal Amanda........relaxed.......... and pet-friendly to......bonus.......enjoy

I've just been reading the reviews of the site, it seems like the campers using tents love it and the negative reviews all came from people who rented static caravans. Dog friendly and campfire friendly! Time to practice your firefighting!

Yep, the fuel cans are the same size as a standard trangia meths burner.
I like it for safety reasons. Being a bit clumsy and all.

Brambling inspired me to get some of the chaffing gel tins after a wee camp we had last year. Its good to have options. :)
