I have created this thread so that the chatter and banter can continue, but keep the main thread clear and on-topic. It makes it difficult to spot serious questions and other such things when there is so much background noise.

do we want to sort out a BBQ for the last night on site ?

nothing to mental just some burgers/hotdogs

@Ark79 Re. the Summer meet. I live at about half distance for you travelling down, just off Jct 29 of the M6 . So if you want to break your journey for a coffee and a rest I can give you directions . Alternatively, we could rendezvous at Jct 29 and travel in convoy, and I know the way. I have PMR radios to keep in contact.

Very kind offer Paul 😁 we will work something out closer to the time mate ….would be great to follow you there as by the sounds of things it’s a bugger to find

It may just be a case of the blind leading the blind…he found us once but that may have been a fluke…they’re busy redesigning the road layouts as we speak.

There are American signal crayfish in the Wye and Irfon however fishing them is highly regulated to prevent spreading them upstream. It is possible to get permission from NRW but it’s time consuming and difficult. They’re particularly obtuse when it comes to crayfish traps.

edit, I’ve been informed that there is a reintroduction program for native white clawed crayfish in one of the tributaries of the river Irfon so no licences to trap crayfish will be granted here in the foreseeable future. There is currently A £4000 fine if convicted of harming them.

It's the same throughout the country. The authorities are desperate to get rid of them but need to control how it's done. They're between a rock and a hard place - invasive problem species on one side vs homo sapien sapiens, who are not all as wise as their Latin name suggests. I do have traps but I don't think 'your' bit of river is the appropriate place to use them.

This is for @Hagrid (and anyone else planning to make a bow @Ark79?): Great that you want to make a bow. You don't need to bring anything, other than yourself and plenty of energy. However, if you have your own tools it's helpful. The tools you will be using are a small axe or hatchet, a drawknife, a spokeshave, and a small saw. If you have any of these items please bring them. Sharps need to be really sharp, but I have the necessary to sharpen them. Blisters are a possibility so gloves come in handy. Other, more specialised tools, or any of the above that you don't have, I can provide. P.S. It'll be lovely to see you and the family again, John.

Definitely for me Paul 👍🏻 I’ll bring my own tools as I have a tendency to brake things 👍🏻

I quite fancy learning about natural fibres/cordage. We have nettles that will be at their optimum for cordage (poor man’s linen) by late August, early September. We have hybrid lime trees that can also provide bark for cordage (up to 6” diameter limbs from pruning, not felling)
