Age has slowed me down somewhat so these days I tend to go for a ramble. Some time ago I watched a TV series called Natural Navigation and it starred a few actor types being taught how to navigate without the use of a compass by Tristan Gooley. Recently I found his website and throught the summer I thought I might try some of his methods while I'm out and about. I think it could be a handy skill to have and be fun learning.:)

with regards to the subject of natural navigation here are some of the things I've noticed over the years. Our weather comes predominantly from the West (but don't accept it as the norm) so up on the moors Dartmore, Exmoor, Bodmin etc or any exposed areas most of the trees will lean towards the East so if you stand with the tree on your left side you will be facing more or less North. from that you can more or less work out the relative compass points, You get lost up on the moors and you find a stream, well water always flows downhill so follow the flow and you will eventually find a road or even an isolated farm

I was camped on the Moor the January before last, and took a photo that illustrates the truth of what you say Joe. All the trees growing along this old wall had an East or North-Eastlery lean...:D

It was a wild trip, I could hear the roar of the river at night in my camp over a mile away.

That looks a bit like Dartmeet

A wild lonely but beautiful place. I was there 6 nights and and then the wind went from South-Westerly to North-Westerly quite quickly and I got out just in time, before the snow came. Don't mind the snow when I'm camped but it was a fair trek back to my motor, so I left when the weather broke because getting home cross country to Sussex would have been a pain.
