Zebra Pot Baking

Well not a total fail but as good as, used too much mix which resulted in the middle not cooking, the bacon and egg cooked as did the outside of the bannock

Looking forward to the next test :)

Bloody good effort Al thanks for sharing.................................................the post I mean :sneaky::rofl:
Not had chance to try it yet........but will be soon.

Thunder just started here:eek::eek::eek:

Thanks Bill, I'll give it another crack during the week, I'm going to third the amounts next time, what was cooked was ok, needed more salt in the mix this time so maybe the same amount of salt in the reduced flour mix ? all fun and games and a learning curve for the field :) I'll post up weights when I know them  I know that the cup I used is 400ml, what that translates to in weight I'll have to see :) A shame as the rest looked tip top, maybe a bit of oil needed on the bottom of my pan ?

Hi Al.

Cant see any rocks in the picture........did you have any in the bottom of your baking pot??.....might help to stop the bottom catching?
Either that or buy a nice little nonstick tin?

Have you got a simmer plate on your trangia burner?.......get the pot up to temperature then control the heat a little and cook slower and longer on simmer?
A more controlled flame may help your lid clips too........and save a bit of fuel?

Trangia Replacement Simmer Cap Simmering Ring NEW | eBay

Hark at me giving it all the chat :rofl:............I will probably end up with burnt offerings and homemade charcoal when I try it :rofl:

Good post mate thanks for sharing:thumbsup:

Morning Bill, no rocks no but in the first picture, bottom left, it's one of those single egg frying pans with the handle taken off, I used that upside down in the bottom of the Zebra and then the other pot on top of that, I have a simmer ring yes and may use it next time or, as I was thinking a different slower / longer burning stove I have, also a different pot stand, something a little higher, it's all good practice, at the end of the day I think I just had too much mix too :) Busy day today but will have a couple more cracks during the week :)

Morning Al :)

Gotcha mate

Will find the ideal set up I'm sure:thumbsup:...........soon it will become second nature mate:thumbsup:

Izzing down here at the moment:rolleyes::(:D

Yes Bill 'we' will crack this, I was wondering whether the 16cm might be too big ? maybe too much air to heat up for bannock, no evidence for that, just a thought, it's all trial and error to start with, even the guys on youtube must have gone through it ;) cracking start to the day here and I might get chance to try again this evening, fingers crossed :)

No pain no gain Al.............got to start somewhere :D

I'm hoping the 16 will be ok mate........it should heat up well enough for the job.
Hope you get the chance and time to try again this evening......look forward to your results:thumbsup:

Still pouring down here :rolleyes::D

Morning Al :)

Good day for baking here mate........well.....up to now anyway

We have a few things to take care of this morning........but may get into the garden for a BBQ and bake later on this afternoon.
Picked up a bag of currents for some bannock too:thumbsup:

Are you having another crack at it today?

Morning Bill, funny you should say that, second trial on the go, I won't bother with all the same pictures, I'll just show the end result, happy BBQ and Bake Off :)

And eaten, although tasty etc I don't think it will be a staple of mine, way too much cleaning up needed afterwards, I am going to try a Poussin this week and just plain Bannock, I'll post those up :)

Hi Al :)

Well, that is looking very nice indeed mate........almost good enough to eat :p:D
Might add a bit of onion in mine?

We did our bits n bobs in the morning......and I had a look for some small nonstick baking tins.......not a prayer in Tesco......all far too big:(
I will source some.

Too much cleaning up :D.....just soak your pans etc while you are eating your meal Al...........simples:D
Or try lining the pot with tin foil smeared with oil?
Look forward to seeing your bannock mate.......plain?.....or will you add some currents or whatever?

Happy days mate:thumbsup:

Morning Bill, I know what you're saying about tins, can't seem to find one in the supermarkets, had to look on Amazon, I like the idea of tin foil, that would make the whole thing easier to take out of the pot and clean up

I might add Blueberries or something, cheese ?

Morning Al

Blueberries and cheese sounds nice mate
Off to the Post Office in a minute.....will look for some tins then while in town.

Yes, the foil may help mate.....worth a go I reckon.
Better pick up some bacon too:whistle::D:thumbsup:

Well, I managed to have a play mate.

Made a bannock mix up:

1 cup flour
1 level teaspoon baking powder.
3 Powdered milk.
1/4 salt
Dash of oil and water.
Currents.
Had no sugar

Used the Firebox to cook with.....filled about halfway with charcoal.
Lit with fire biscuit.

Preheated the tin while waiting for charcoal to settle down a bit.

I knew I had made the dough to stodgy but went ahead anyway after letting it stand for a while.

40 minutes later.....I called my neighbour in to help me lift it from the zebra :rofl:

Cooked.

DSC03189.JPG

Sliced it down the middle and it looked O.K.
On tasting the texture was good.....but definitely put too much salt in there.
Being a current bread it needs a bit of sugar in the mix.

All in all, I'm happy with the setup and end result......just need to tweak the mix now.

The enamel bowl worked well Al.......minimum clean up and fairly nonstick with a wipe of oil around before you add the mix:thumbsup::)

I will try the Breakfast Muffin tomorrow ;)

The bottom did catch a bit but no drama.

Forgot to mention.....I used the 16cm pot to bake the bannock......work ok mate.

That looks great, looks a better consistency to mine by a long shot, the bottom of the bannock is just well done ;) what's you're thoughts, more height, other ?

Cracking effort though :)

Cheers Al

Just well done:rofl::rofl:;)

Thoughts are more of the ceramic beads at first Al.
I do not want to increase the height and make things unstable.
The little enamel bowl worked a treat.....and having tapered sides meant it was easier to remove the bannock when cooked
