My newest toy arrived yesterday, a brand spanking new Vigo apple press. This will allow me to make use of all the bruised or windfall apples that would otherwise be wasted. The juice can either be fermented or pasteurised.
Since I was going to go into producing mead next year this will fit in nicely as a lot of the home brew equipment would be duel purpose.
The apple trees were planted 9 years ago so they're only just beginning to produce reasonable crops. I've just picked the Bardsey Island and Court Pen du Plait apples for single crop ciders as they're both historic varieties. The others are a mixture of desert, cooking and cider apples but can be blended because I lack the equipment to do 30 odd different batches.

Mother in laws 100+ year old apple tree is absolutely loaded this year, more apples than we can even give away

It has its teething troubles but nothing that couldn't be fixed with a little tube of threadlock. I've just finished pressing a 25litre fermenting bin full. Still loads more apples to press.

Nice bit of kit with a nice outcome, how long will it take to make the first batch ;)

It varies, depending on the apple's sugar content and temperature. I suppose I'll just leave it until the fermentation almost stops, rack it off into a fresh fermentation bin and top it up with some sugar syrup to start it off again...fingers crossed that I don't end up with vinegar.

Haha nice, grandma used to have one. And the neighbour (a peasant) got drunk and put his hand in.... So first the work, then the cider

OMG This is good stuff, it's not quite finished fermenting but I thought I'd try some as scrumpy..
