Walther.

Yes....the 95 and 98 actions are the same albeit the 98 has the barrel sleeve.
Which was added to help with the muzzle flip, and add weight to it.
The stock on the 98 is lovely I think.

You can drop a 95 action into a 98 stock.

Yes, the 98 is nose heavy.....not a bad thing as it helps with muzzle flip.
That's the reason the barrel is thicker/weighted.
I still have my HW95....sold it to a friend....but now back in the cabinet.
The 95 was tuned by Tony Wall of Sandwell Field Sports and shoots very nicely.......11.4ftlbs and can cock it with my little finger.
The 95 is practically the same action as the 98 but not so nose heavy and is lighter.
Never had a problem with either of them........just keep an eye on the hinge break pins for tightness.

The beauty of the 98 is the adjustable comb and butt pad........you can play around until you get you're preferred fit.
If you want to play further you can also sort out you're length of pull........mine is around the 13 inch mark.
Both the 95 and the 98 have the adjustable Rekord trigger unit.....some people knock it.....but I never had any problems apart from setting the trigger to light (safe...but light)

If you are looking for a springer and want to get the very best from it you could do worse than ring Tony Wall and get a price for a new tuned and fettled rifle from him.
He is in West Bromich.

I have no connection or affiliation with the company or Tony personally..........but will praise his first class service and skills.
Bloody hell I was talking to Tony yesterday mate, talking about his 98's.

You mentioned you were thinking along the lines of a .20 Boogie?
Never shot .20 myself but would like to try it one day :)
Tried .177 and it just didn't feel right....if that makes sense.........much prefer .22/.25 for hunting........just my preference.

Look forward to some more news :D

I considered it mate but the problem is ammo availability, with limited choice you have to be certain you can find a round that your Rifle likes, if not you're buggered. .20 has some interesting ballistics, it's nearer to .22 but in some ways behaves like a .177 having a flatter trajectory but more potential KE downrange than the .177. I've used .177 but prefer .22 just because .22 for the same amount of ft lbs does more damage viz entry exit, it's a larger round. on paper there should be no difference and in fact the .177 beats the .22 out to 30 yds as it is travelling faster for the same amount of ft lbs. Over 30yds the .22 wins as it holds its momentum better, conserving the energy more efficiently, but it has a more pronounced trajectory. Being lighter the .177 loses speed and KE rapidly over longer distances.
In my experience the problem with the .177 is that less than perfect Heart/Lung shots although fatal allow the quarry time to scamper or fly off, giving the impression that you have missed. You haven't, it's just that the pellet has passed through the quarry so fast it doesn't transfer it's energy quickly enough, the same less than perfect shot with a .22 would kill the animal through impact shock. Head shots are the order of the day with .177, you don't see many youtube vids where people like to take chest shots with a .177 for the above reason. With a .22 you can take confident chest shots as you know any small game will be quickly dispatched.
I use "chairgunner" a ballistic calculator programme that allows you to see the downrange performance of any .177-.22-.17HMR-Crossbow, It will tell you how much energy at a given yardage your ammunition is producing. You can print off your results and see exactly how much holdover etc you need for any given range. It's free.

Excellent mate.....yes Chairgun is a good tool to have at your disposal.
Feed in the correct information and away you go
Having said that......I still enjoy mapping a scope on the range.....5yd increments.........good fun too:D

Do you enjoy a bit of target work as well as hunting?

I do enjoy target work as to me it's an important part of Hunting, making sure your ammunition is as accurate as possible. I love the ballistics side of things and enjoy testing pellets. Interestingly I tested some JSB exact Heavies 18gr ( not that heavy) and they had excellent downrange performance, out of an 11.5ft lb PCP they retained 9.2 ft lbs @30yds. From 30-50yds was a stunner:thumbsup:---at 50yds they still produced 7.90 ft lbs. They have very good aerodynamics and slip through the air well. I never use any type of hollow point pellet either, past 20 yds they really start to suffer. Can't beat a good domed head pellet.

...and yet nobody mentions the HW97K?

...but then I prefer a one piece barrel and action.....

I use 8.4gn jsb domed pellets for both field target and hunting. They perform well in my hw99s, hatsan dominator and bsa scorpion. both of my spring guns run at 10.5ft/lbs and the bsa at 11.5 ft/lbs . i still don't really notice the difference between the guns in terms of knock down power and trajectory. all are zero'd at 35yds.

Has anybody tried any off the lead free pellets that are available now? i remember using some Prometheus paragons with poor results , i was wondering if the modern offerings from rws and h&n were any better.

H&N worked a treat for me... Never had a problem

"Defiant" pellets are lead alloy.

Use them in my B.S.A Scultra .22..............14gr LARGE head size.
Also used them with a B.S.A SuperTen before I sold it..........again .22

Hardly ever find any damaged ones in the box......they do fly extremely well.

pellets can be very rifle specific....I now only use AA diablo field.....
