15 yard range... compare results!!

Start of pellet tests for HW77 .177 ,today I tried the JSB Exact Express at 30 yds. Could not see whereI was hitting,so I did not try to zero with them, just shot for group size aiming at center of target five shots each. I can't see where they are any better than the JSB Exacts. Lined up for next pellet test tomorrow I have JSB Exact RS.

Yep, they're crap. Next! :)

HW77 test # 2 using JSB RS. You can pretty much ignore the first four targets,I was chasing the zero with indifferent results. On #5 I stopped and said hell with it and just shot for group size. That's five shots in one tiny group.I adjusted it right and shot #6 target for group size. That's five more shots in a relatively tiny group. I'm thinking I might have found the right pellet finally...

Too late it's over! :p

Planning on zeroing the HW77 with the JSB RS and not touching it further. I'll shoot the darn thing when I feel up to it,other wise I feel I've got it where it will shoot as I need it to. Next big fight will be finding the right pellet for the HW95.

Made a little time to put some more lead down the recently tuned HW95 yesterday. As it still needed bedding in, I thought I'd use up some of the wadcutters I have left. Waste not want not, as they say. I set my target at 15 yards and armed with RWS Geko 7grn pellets, I set about shooting 5 pellets per group and by the last target on top row, I'd settled into my rhythm. I followed that with a couple of reasonable groups on row 2. The last target on row 2 was when I started adjusting the trigger (Tony set it too heavy for me) and the groups on row 3 were getting there, with the exception of the "flyer" on the third target in that row, which I'm positive was down to the nut behind the trigger.:p

I'm pretty sure that it's me, but I really have to concentrate hard on every part of the shooting sequence to get satisfactory results with HW95. With the TX200HC I don't have to work so hard to get the results and the whole experience feels much more relaxed. I think it all stems from me being so fecking fussy about my trigger preferences.:eek:

On to the card itself. The first 3 rows were shot with me resting the rifle directly onto the red target support. The first group in row 4, the rifle was resting in my hand, which it turn was resting on my shooting cushion. I think I need to do a proper test with both rests to determine which is the most accurate for me, but the solid rest does appear to have the edge.

The 2 x 10 shot groups (middle two targets on 4th row) were me performing a chrono test on the rifle. Now I shoot without wearing my specs, but if I'm not wearing my specs I can't read the results on the Combro, so I decided to shoot those 2 groups with my glasses on. Wouldn't want to do that for long, trippy man.

Chrono results:

1. 841
2. 825
3. 839
4. 832
5. 842
6. 827
7. 844
8. 818
9. 828
10. 855
11. 845
12. 825
13. 830
14. 823
15. 851
16. 852
17. 837
18. 823
19. 827
20. 835

High 855 = 11.36fpe. Low 818 = 10.4fpe. Ave 835 = 10.8fpe

Considering the HW95 as only had about 200-300 pellets through it since I received it back from Tony, I'm fairly happy with those results and I'm sure if I chrono decent pellets these figures will change a little, but I'll be happy for it to settle around the 11fpe mark, especially when you consider this rifle was pushing 11.98 when I sent it to Tony. In that respect I'm much happier with the numbers the 95 is recording now.

A 37 fps spread? You've been had, mate!

Unless those light pellets are painting an unrepresentative picture, I'd send it back to the long-haired brummie fatster and tell the kant to do it again, for free!

For comparison purposes, my V-Mached FAC 97 has an average spread of 9 fps with JSB Exact Heavies... Even the untuned, unbedded-in FAC 85 has a spread of just 10.7 fps with Bisley Magnums...

Anyroadup, your attachment is invalid, and I'd love to see the groups. ;)

Here's some useful info on the Rekord trigger, for you and TWBryan. :)

Show this to Terrence, it's not just him. That's running in for you.
I reckon it's the combro jossling about. The tiniest difference in distance from the barrel and it'll do that.
Good groups are going to be next to impossible up down up down. I think just on this one occasion, I have to almost agree with coW pOO.

My buddy big Ted sometimes, re sizes his pellets before plinking, in a little, I don't what you'd call it, twisty round metal thing with a probe that interferes with skirts. Makes them a bit wider for better barrel fit.

I did TELL Ted mind, but he didn't believe me, when I said, skirts that are bent a bit get well straightened slipping up the barrel.

Oily fingers, how far you insert the pellet in the barrel, pellet tightness, which folk often comment saying that was a tight fit, or that slipped in easy..

I received some pellet samples in the mail and carried out the first test on the HW95L ,shooting at 30 yards with RWS Meisterkugelm. The shot was high and way over to the right. I chased zero until I could get one on target. I ran out of adjustment in the scope then. The #2 group got me excited five shots in a little group. Targets 3,4,and 5 were not so sublime. By the time I reached target 6 I had two pellets left and tried them on the Remington boar target, missed with the first, hit with the second.

In this instance,I feel the pellet isn't terribly consistant,I've run into similar issues with RWS Superdomes.

Running out of adjustment on the scope makes me a bit concerned. I did test it against the Leapers 6X and got the same results,I don't think it's the scope.

The only modifications I've done is to loosen the breech bolt, apply moly and straighten out the metal tab that locks trigger adjustment.

I'll have another chrono session with the F1 Chrony and see how the results compare and I'll try decent pellets too.:p If it's still crap after that, I'm gonna light a bonfire and burn the useless piece of German sh1te.

Some nice, tight groups there, GDFB. Don't light the bonfire just yet...

I checked back on my chrony results for the untuned 85. Bisley Mags (21 gr) had a velocity spread of 10.7 fps; H&N FTT 14.66 gr 11.5 fps; JSB Jumbo Monsters (25.36 gr) 18.35; and FX domed (16 gr) 47.4 fps.

So it might just be the pellet. I'd chrony it with a sensible pellet rather than junk wadcutters, and you might get a more sensible chrony reading. :)

Here's today chrono card.

Todays test was performed at 15 yards, using the F1 Chrony, instead of the Combro and JSB Exact Express instead of RWS Geko wadcutters. I made no adjustments to the scope, as I was only interested in the chrono results.

Top row: Target 1 was 6 shots with the first pellet almost hitting the 1, the rest forming a reasonable group. Target 2 was 14 shots to complete my chrono string of 20. Very pleased with the group, if I say so myself, but that's what I need to be able to shoot at 25-30 yards.:p The others were all single shot, as you can see and by then, my hand was starting to give me serious jip. I'm going to have to rely on the solid rest, rather than using my shooting cushion.

Chrono Results:

1. 827
2. 822
3. 821
4. 815
5. 818
6. 817
7. 816
8. 820
9. 823
10. 830
11. 817
12. 825
13. 823
14. 816
15. 820
16. 823
17. 824
18. 823
19. 824
20. 813

Low 813 = 11.55fpe. High 830 = 12.04fpe. Ave 820 = 11.75fpe.

Well it looks like the rifle is going back to Tony. I need to chrono all the decent pellets I've got and compare the results to the last full test I did prior to tune. You may recall that the rifle was running very hot, but was just legal with every pellet I had. Now it's over the limit and I'm not happy about it.:( I was told to expect the power level to be around 11fpe rising to about 11.3fpe when it's run in. I'm concerned that the power is still creeping up as the rifle settles down further. Beginning to regret buying this rifle, but it won't fecking beat me.:p

Well, at least the spread is down to 17 fps with a sensible pellet. Much more consistent, although it looks as though the rifle is still settling down -- I'd expect a spread of 10 fps or less from a tuned HW. May be the pellet again.

Try a heavier pellet to see what the power level is. You may find that the smaller inertia of a lighter pellet is giving some strange readings.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about the power level until everything's bedded in, but then I'm a rebel. If you're really worried about it, leave the rifle cocked while you're away next week, and that will reduce the power slightly.
