Hi Guys, just a quick hello from me, my names Steve, but loads folk call me 'Johno' (surname Johnstone) so hence the username, live in Dunfermline/Fife, work offshore in Singapore on 28/28 rotation, so don't get the time I would like to shoot/fish etc, in Singapore at the minute as I write this.

Do a bit of Hobby Taxidermy, fish the fly, keep/breed a few snakes,(had 200+ up till about a year ago), so anyone local about, feel free to give me a shout & anyone else for that matter, look forward to catching up with everyone on here.

Cheers,

Steve.

OK, I'll say it before anyone else does, 200 snakes is obsessive and you should seek professional help immediately.

Welcome aboard, you'll fit right in here. ;)

What do you shoot, in terms of guns and targets/quarry?

Lol, it's been said before, only got 20+ now, it was all part of a 'master plan' to breed & produce a worlds 1st which I did in 2012 (The Corcra Ball Python), so once that had been achieved started to downsize, too much work/time spent with 200 snakes plus rats/mice to breed to feed them, I can assure you.

Shooting wise, when I can, I shoot all the usual suspects - Rabbit/Corvids etc, anything that's decent enough will get the 'taxidermy' treatment out back in the shed !! & just the normal plinking in the back garden...

In process of tying up new perm (hopefully) 1500acres + in Fife to start in New Year..

Welcome Johno, another jock on here is probably one to many but new year is coming up so wee drams all round eh ?
1500 acre permission ! ? Sounds like a coach trip visit from the forum crew, your going to need some help ;)

New Year coming right enough and I'm T total...lol, yeah just under 1500 acres lot of it just sparse land, few woodland areas, not going to say too much about it in case I temp fate and don't tie it up, got meeting in Jan once home from work, so here's hoping .

Hi Steve, welcome to AS. Do you perform Taxidermy on humans?????? If so I have a few fecking names I'd like you work on. None of the forum members here tho, I might add. Enjoy the forum. Snakes Brrrrrrrrr

Johno, you really are quite strange, aren't you? :p

Two questions: if it's dead, why does the Barn Owl have an acupuncture needle sticking out of it? And why don't you use the toilet instead of crapping on a pile of old newspaper? :D

It's been said many times CH, & no doubt will be said many times more before I depart this mortal coil...I'm here to set trends not follow them, wife/eldest daughter (22 - that's the daughter not my wife ---- I wish),both hate the snakes & will not go near them & they are totally banned from inside the house (snakes - before you jump on that one) youngest daughter (18) will help out with them till she gets tagged (bit) then that's her off for a few weeks..lol & as far as the taxidermy things are concerned they think I'm Dr Frankenstein sitting out the back creating things...all their pals think I'm cool as hell though - funny they don't see that !!

I have the ability to shoot something & then bring in back to life (so to speak), providing it's still got a head left ,

& that's not crap in a tub....that's about 4k to me...;)

Few years ago, I would have stuff that was selling between 3k - 6k an animal, those days have gone now :(

Market has crashed considerably on the Royal Python front, I saw it coming and that was one of the reasons I decided to get out, plus the fact that I had achieved my goal of hitting a worlds first, named it the 'Corcra Ball' which will be my legacy when I'm gone, as everyone else who subsequently produces one has to call it the 'Corcra Ball" - stick it in Google & will come up with my details/website etc...

Too many people jumped on the bandwagon thinking they could make a quick buck, & big breeders in the US started holding high end males back (not selling them - males can breed within 12 months/females 3 - 4 years) so if no high end males available to add to your gene pool the females no good to you for 4 years, the cost of the males would go up, 2-3 years ago there were 4-5 gene males out there costing 25k plus, same snake today prob 1500.00, was just getting silly.

With all the animals - various sized racking for different sized snakes - incubators - thermostats - racks for breeding rats/mice in etc, at one point I probably had 70k+ sitting out the back, not that I had paid that for it, as breeders would trade animals for selective breeding, you would be very surprised the number of guys that have become very well off from breeding Royal Pythons - primarily in the US, as they were years ahead of UK with multi gene animals, so got out at the right time sold up/traded it all & downsized, only have about 20, 3 -4 gene animals left, which one of my mates keeps at his for joint breeding venture.

The worlds first unfortunately was a female, had it been a male & able to breed in a year after birth would have been worth 12-15k, but as a female only a third of that, their value goes up once they get to breeding weight & up futher once a proven egg layer, this female bred earlier this year and produced another 2 world firsts (different animals - different genes), but as said market is foooked now, so better off holding on to hatchlings, see if market turns around, it'll be a while but who knows.....

Maybe grass snakes culd be the next big thing, so get yer spade out & dig them up... need to go some to beat these though --

Caramel Pied Ball Pythons - even in todays deflated market still cost you 12 -14k a hatchling

Hey Johno!

im sure you'll get on well with Spock! Especially with your 200 snakes!

Spock likes playing with the small one down his trousers!

Lol, I've hatched a few 'one eyed snakes' over the years, normaly down to problems in the incubator, & I was once talking with a Romulan female who was telling her Klingon girlfriend that:

No idea how true it is, maybe just a Galaxy Wispa ;)

J24, I reckon yer a bit of an obsessive genius mate! Loved the pics of your workshop, equipment, subject matter and especially the wee golden Caramel Piebald Pythons (can I nick that pic for my desktop background?).

The only snakes I've ever came in contact with are Adders…I once handled a dead one that a young scared bloke battered to death with a stick whilst we were collecting gulls eggs for breakfast, t'was only a young un' too. :(

I came upon many of them while deer stalking, sometimes even a pile of them when crawling through the heather face first! I never once had any reaction at all, though I did retreat rather carefully just in case they all woke up and decided to attack me.

Gorgeous creatures, and I think the only snake that gives birth to live young as opposed to laying eggs?

Btw, welcome to the forum and ignore those other winkers that are just jealous of the python in my troosers! :p

Hi Spock, more than welcome to use photo as screen saver, & yeah you can get a nasty bite off an adder, but not as deadly as 'your one eyed knicker python, that all the boys are talking about..;)

Few snakes can & do give birth to live:& you are correct Adders are live bearers.

Oviparous snakes (about 70% of snakes) lay eggs - pythons, adders, cobras etc.

Viviparous snakes - Boa Constrictors/Green Anacondas etc - nuture there young inside them without an egg shell, they grow absorbing placenta & yolk sac, then are born live.

Ovoviviparous snakes - Boas - Yellow Anacondas - Rattlers - Garter Snakes are a cross between an egg layer & non egg layer, at hatching time the female hatches the eggs inside her (retains the egg) and the hatchlings come out live...

& as you say gorgeous creatures, you would be amazed at the number of people who are terrified from them, as long as you handle them with respect & never trust any of them..lol, you'll be fine but yeah they do 'tag' you every now & then, just to remind you they have a sharp end..

Couple pics of one of my Green Trees:
