Hospital check up first thing and then home for some plinking. Firstly, we re-chronoed my buddies wayward 77, which if you recall, was shooting 13fpe before he left it cocked and we both promptly forgot about it. We reckon it was cocked 4-5 weeks in all, and when chronoed with AADF 5.52 recorded 12.2fpe. We decided to give it another 2 weeks cocked and to retest. Talk about consistent tho, over 10 shots the high was 586fps and low was 583fps. 👍 Does there come a point where leaving a springer cocked for long periods doesn't actually have any affect on power?

Next I asked my buddy to zero the TX that has just been fitted with my early birthday present. The great thing about the TargetMaster scope is that it doesn't impede the loading port, unlike the hawke that was previously on the rifle. After a spot of lunch comprising of Bev's lovely homemade cheese scones, I decided to see if I had enough energy to cock and shoot the TX. I was expecting to fail, after failing miserably to cock the Pro Sport on Tuesday. I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only could I cock and shoot it, I was able to get about 30 shots off. 😎 I will have to adjust the trigger in the future, as it has creep in the second stage that just doesn't "feel " right, but that's for another day.

Shot today in bright sunshine with a very strong breeze, which I doubt had much impact on the flight of the pellet given the 15 yard max distance I was shooting over. Just goes to show how little or no practice buggers up one's technique. With the exception of the two targets circles in pen, all targets were one pellet. The circled targets were 5 shots. I really must start putting some practice now, talk about rusty. 😂 Each yellow target is 15mm in diameter.

From the research I've seen, it's quite gradual. I suppose if you left one cocked for long enough, the spring would eventually set at its compressed length (i.e. stay compressed and not deliver any power at all), but that might take months or years with spring steel. I stopped with the HW85 when it got to a shootable level, so wouldn't know...

The rifle shoots nice CH, but it's still just a tad over the limit. I'm not sure just far under the legal limit will be acceptable to my buddy, but obviously that will have to be his choice. I think at this stage I would be considering collapsing a coil or two, or removing one altogether.

I stumbled upon something interesting today but you all probably know it anyway. Some time ago I fired the XS78 without the moderator fitted and it produced a fair old crack. Hmmm, thinks I; I will chrono this beast with and without the moderator once I get it to settle down.

Well, having fitted the new Gmac barrel and replaced the standard pellet probe with a pin probe (that I had in the gun box) I set about re-zeroing the Stoeger scope that I fitted the other day and did a chrono check, using Bisley Magnums at 21.14 gr.

I only did two strings of three and noted the difference with and without moderator

With...……….. 11.09 ft/lbs 11.09 ft/lbs 11.0 ft/lbs Without ……………. 11.46 ft/lbs 11.97 ft/lbs 11.18 ft/lbs

Should now be legal, I suppose, but will do some longer strings later.

Gdfb...……..did you do the check without the moderator fitted?

Sorry, my mistake, I was thinking cheap commie springer rather than cheap commie CO2 rifle... :alert:

Nowt wrong with cheap commies ... couldn't eat a whole one of course .... Though I think I might have tried with the Gulag Burger served on an internal Aeroflot flight around 1989 .... Russians.. Stark staring mad... The air dollys on Aeroflot all appear to be strategically shaved Olympic Shot Putters, in an A line skirt. Gender non-defined.

UK people only think Germans are rude because they haven't met Russians :rolleyes-orange:

That's how they got their name...……...Rushins! :)

Never flown Aeroflot but once came close to flying with Polish LOT. Decided to drive home instead!

Wise choice, roller skating is better than LOT or Aeroflot and some others!

Unfortunately for business reasons at the time I had no choice but use Aeroflot ... At the time when they killed more passengers in crashes than any other airline.... including some guys in the DRC flying Dak 3's dating from WW2; with basically no spares and plainly visible bullet hole repairs :worried-orange:

Of course around the late 80's Russia was still pretty secretive and it still is ..... So the west were never told just how many internal flights simply disappeared ... Any more than the Russian public. You have to fly as there are few roads away from urbanisation and Russia really is unbelievably vast, roughly twice the size of the next largest country which is Canada ... Little wonder the sheer size of the Russian landscape much helped to defy the Grande Armée and Barbarossa.

Second day of really acquainting myself with My HW98. I must say the more I shoot this rifle the more it impresses. Yesterday I was testing it with Exacts, with fair results to be honest. Today I tested it with the S510 & TX200 favourite diet, that being Exact Express. I was shooting at the maximum distance my garden offers, which is 21 yards measured with my range finder immediately before the battery died.

Today's session was a little difficult due to impaired vision. My vision is affected to a greater or lesser extent on day to day and is a results of the chemo I received recently. It is bad enough for my consultants to recommend that I do not drive until my vision returns to normal. Anyways, I got a clear an image as I could through the Hawke scope that is temporarily fixed atop the 98. After yesterdays session I decided that the trigger could do with lightening just a touch. 1/8 of a turn did the trick, and after getting my eye in I recorded these results.

From the top:
Rows 1 & 2 were one shot one pellet per target
Row 3 is 5 shots per target.
I'm reasonably happy with the results, given that I'm so out of practice, but it was really great to finally have a couple of sessions with this rifle and be reasonably consistent. All the 5 shot groups were covered by a 5p coin, which indicates the rifle groups fairly accurately. It just remains to be seen if it is as accurate when I work my way out to 35 yards (my usual zero for a 177) when I go to the range next week, providing the nut behind the trigger gets his act together that is.

I must say that I'm really glad to be back in the saddle, so to speak. On the plus side of things it takes me about 10 minutes of walking to and fro to put all the kit out, and the same to put it all away, so I'm getting my exercise too. I feel a little tired by the time I've packed it all away, but it's a happy tired.
