5.11 ATAC A2 Torch

5.11 ATAC A2 Torch

A powerful, versatile and reliable pocket torch is always a useful bit of kit to carry and I have been impressed recently by the 5.11 ATAC A2 Torch from 5.11.

Precision-engineered from aerospace grade aluminium, the ATAC A2 measures approx 15.5cm x 2.7cm and weighs about 138g with batteries installed.

The batteries used are standard AA batteries (the torch comes complete with 2 Duracell AA batteries) and these produce a beam of about 162 lumens (on high setting) that can usefully reach up to around 127m.

There is also a low setting (15 lumen and 39m reach) and a strobe setting (162 lumen and 127m reach) which can be selected by lightly pressing the rubber-covered intelligent switch in the butt of the torch.

The batteries should last approx 1 hour 45 minutes in constant high mode, 75 hours in low, and 3 hours in the strobe mode, while the torch is designed to withstand drops of 2 meters and has a weather-resistant construction which I found capable of withstanding short periods of full immersion.

The excellent performance is achieved by using clever electronic components that include a Cree XP-E LED bulb, gold-plated contacts and the regulated circuit, but in user terms it means that you can easily cycle the torches output from a penetrating beam, to a soft beam for close work, or a fast strobe that is excellent for signalling / marking hazards or even disorienting an attacker, to just giving a quick blip of light with the switch partially depressed.

The light always comes back on high mode after it has been switched off and the circuitry maintains a good light throughout the life of the batteries with minimum fade as they die.

The torch is comfortable to hold in the hand and has a soft touch anti-roll ring to avoid it rolling away if you put it down on a flat but sloping surface.

A built-in spring steel pocket clip allows the torch to be attached to a pocket or webbing with a good level of security, while an adjustable wrist lanyard is supplied to help you avoid dropping the torch when using it. The lanyard incorporates a strong break-away link for safety with security.

The reliable, tough and very practical 5.11 ATAC A2 Torch is easy and comfortable to carry and use, comes in Tactical Black only and costs around £59.00 with a limited lifetime warranty. Part of a range of five 5.11 Pocket Torches, the ATAC A2 fits a belt clip / holster that is compatible with the whole ATAC range and only takes up 1.9cm of belt width.
