Has anyone tried the pitch extracted from pine roots? I can't think of anything more natural to seal the surface of wood. If I remember right it used to be used on wooden skis and is also used with animal fat in making pitch glue

i've tried it melted in beeswax. great smelling finish but not very durable, due i suspect to the minimal surface penetration.
for deeper penetration i submerged my carved stuff in the melted mixture but the heat made everything brittle. i called it quits there.

some of the cooler bushcrafter guys make a "boot butter" with pitch, beeswax and olive oil. they use the same stuff for a lip balm (!). one suspects they just like the stuff and use it everywhere.

pitch, turps and candle wax makes a great accelerant for DIY firestarters. đź‘Ś
