hi all just joined with plans to finally get out there, out of the city and off the roadbike occasionally to slow things down a bit. Looking though a box i found some kit some of which it older than me but i need to add to it. I bought a lifesaver 4000 bottle that should be with me in the week. It was cheap and i couldn't say no. I want to buy an axe now. Where would you suggest I can purchase a Hultafors classic at a reasonable price?

Good morning |Toby and welcome to the forum. With reference to the Hultafors the first place to look would be ebay

Thanks for the replies. What difference is there going to be between the Husqvarna for example and the Hultafors classic?

I’d also consider the fiskars range; Not as traditional (fibre glass handles) but great quality and a lot cheaper than some of the more sought after brands.

Hi Toby,

first of all I personally would recommend to go to a local, specialised dealer in your area. I am not aiming to "dictate" a behaviour, but when I read comments like "check eBay" I usually disagree - here's why: Your local dealer provides you with services eBay and others won't. Maybe your local dealer also engages in outdoor communities (here we have specialised dealers organising BC meetings and such). Again, just to be clear: The decision, of course, is yours. Just some food for thought.

That said, try different models in the stores. I find it rather difficult to buy equipment I never held in my hand. Also, the question remains what purpose the hatchet shall serve - do you just want to have a model for the rougher chopping work? Or do you want an allrounder?

In this case you might even want to look at the Cold Steel Trail Hawk. I expect some comments a la "But that's a Tomahawk!" now - so yes, it is. But for me it turned out the most versatile option (after some mods I can use it as a chisel, hammer, knife-substitute and hatchet).

Indeed they is good for thought thank you Rathwulven. Not sure who the is round this area yet having only recently started looking but being in the Midlands UK means I can't be that from somewhere highly recommended

You could do worse than head to the bushcraft show on may bank holiday weekend.

There will be some interesting talks and demos and bargains galore.
