Al and I had decided to get on our bikes and try something different , a fully loaded mountain bike trip along the cinder track from Whitby to Scarborough.

Bikes were packed and route planned , Al travelled down by train and we were ready for the off .......

What I hadn’t fully considered was my lack of fitness , the weight of my bike and a residual “bad chest “ following my holidays in Bali . This combination made for an horrendous 15 miles ! Luckily for me Al was sympathetic and encouraging 🤪🤔

We eventually arrived having seen some fantastic scenery and heart warming camaraderie, suffice to say my bike is now safely back in the garage !

As no plan survives the first contact we decided to stay at the Hayburn Wyke inn and spend the weekend chilling out .Evening meal and a few beers saw us early to bed followed by a following relaxing day and night playing camp .

As my chest was still not right i’d decided to pull the plug on a return journey and following a big slice of humble pie had phoned the wife to come and rescue me 🥴. Al being made of sterner stuff was planning to make the return leg on his Tod . He will no doubt be along later with his tale.

Here’s a few pictures of what was still a fantastic weekend with a few significant lessons learned and a reality check about my fitness 🤔

Fantastic scenery Rob. You're very lucky to have all that on your doorstep. Hope you feel better soon.

T'was a good weekend regardless, we got there after a fair bit of a struggle in places, coming back there were a couple of hills that took there toll on me and a few rests to drink and have a quick lunch were in order. I'll post some pictures up tomorrow probably :)

Spot on guys  would never have thought to use the front wheel as an upright for the tarp:D works a treat by the looks of it:thumbsup:

Looks good guys and Rob, don't be too downhearted, we can all have an off day or two, sometimes you're just not feeling it, it might not be that dreaded 'next stage', just a bad day/feeling 'millennial'/that chest..... whatever, I reckon we've all had them in one way or another.

Some great phots and wel done on the bike trek, I never got used to cycling with panniers etc, I was always happier with a bag on my back as I found the bike more responsive but I'm talking ancient history now, In fact we took our decrepit bikes away to be recycled today and for the first time in years I'm bikeless.

I'm sure Rob won't mind me saying this, it was more than just a general state of unfitness, it was, imvho, medically induced fatigue, we did have a rye grin at a few points but I'll let Rob go into (or not) as much or as litle as he wants to divulge ;)

Very inspiring, pity about not feeling the best but better to alter the plan rather than make yourself worse. Still looked like a great time.
Cracking photos.

Looks like you had a brilliant time! I dont know your level of fitness, but I changed my off road tyres to road tyres on my bike and it was so much easier.

If, and as and when we might get better into it I might look at something, tbf though, the bike, which is a hand me up from Son of performed well, I have to admit, I don't think 6 months ago I would have been able to do the same, losing 2 and a half stone, getting a pup and walking 6, 8, to 12k a day has done me a world of good.

A bit later than planned but here goes.

And we're there, shelters were pitched with speed, dinner and a drink were calling.

Terrible condensation on the first night saw me reconfigure my tarp, didn't help much with condensation as open as it was :(

After a cracking burger the night before and breakfast that morning we self catered the second night, an experiment on my part that worked so well it's going on the menu every time, a stock jelly thing, gravy granules hot water and beef pieces with Idahoan mash, very very nice, 2 microwave steam bags and a cosy.

I had set off early just in case of any problems, everything went smoothly, so much so that I ended up with 2 hours before the next train, luckily there was refuge in the form of a Pub across from the station, it's so quiet even the locals come out during the day lol
