A couple of hours in the wood yesterday and a few photos. Rations for the garden Blue Tits, Great Tits and others first, they are working hard feeding young and need a little help.
Speaking of young, two photos just a week or so apart of the Ducklings on the lake. Yesterday they were busy pulling out their baby feathers, and already marked feathers are showing in a couple of them.
Fluffy.......a week ago
Yesterday less fluffy.......
Wild flowers everywhere along the woodland paths. The Ramson's white flowers are dying but the Garlic smell still fills the wood in places. Red Campion, Meadow Butter Cups and Blue Bells all in flower.
From the edge of the wood the view stretches to the sea in the distance.
Great patches of Bugle, once prized as a plant for controlling blood loss from wounds and as a natural Narcotic.
I didn't bother with a brew kit, just took my small one mug sized vacuum flask with me and stopped for a rest at the Elf King's Dining Table.
This old felled tree has been attracting Badgers. The bark and rotting wood has been broken away for the grubs inside, by the number of holes in the trunk, it looks as if it provided a decent feast too...
The local history informs me this is an old reservoir constructed in the deep woods, filled by the water from a natural Spring which remained cool in the summer in the shadey woods. Dated from the early 1700's when the Country Estate was developing in size and local importance.
Once much deeper of course but silted up now over the Centuries.
On the way home I passed this area where the Cuckoo Flower ( Cardamine Pratensis) grows freely. Cuckoo Flower because it blooms at the same time that the summer visiting bird the Cuckoo arrives from Africa to these shores.
Crossing the lake on the way home. The Water Lillies have come to the surface and soon their big beautiful white flowers will open.
Stay well folks..
