After having a chat on one of the other threads on here Leif said he would send me a few ammo boxes to convert into a wood burning stove.
I received the boxes from Leif and have made a start on converting them.
The boxes Leif supplied are for 5.52mm rounds where most people are using 50cal boxes so these are abit smaller but should be suitable for a small tent.

Today I have been working on the door that will include the air flow vents.
I looked about and came across so 5mm aluminium plate I had hidden in the back of the shed.
So set about cutting it to size for the door and the vent.

Cutting the vent.

After cutting the vent I fixed it to the door with a stainless bolt in the centre ready for drilling the vent holes.
First off I drilled some 6mm holes as a guide for the 16mm drill bit I was going to use for the main holes.

After drilling the 6mm & 16mm holes I cleaned everything up so the vent would turn without problems.
As you can see vent open and vent closed.

I then removed the vent disc and drilled a 6mm hole for the handle to turn the vent and counter sunk the back so the head of the bolt would not foul the door when being turned.
Again I used a stainless nut and bolt for this. I still need to put a handle on the bolt so you don't burn your hand when turning the vent.

I am happy with the way the door has turned out so far and I have now started work on some removable legs for the ammo box, so will get some more pictures up as I work on them.

Was up the shed early this morning so carried on working on the door so the legs can wait for another day.
Started off marking up the doorway hole ready for cutting with a thin disc.

Door marked up

After cutting the doorway out I attached a single hinge, I went for one large hinge over two smaller hinges because as the box gets hot it might buckle or distort very slightly and a single hinge will move better with the box.

I decided to riviot the hinge to the box and door so lined everything up and used a 5.5mm drill bit to match the riviots I had.

I then looked into the best way to fitting a catch to keep the door closed.
So after cutting some more aluminium plate I made a simple gate style latch, lift to open and push down to lock it shut.
It works very well can keeps the door nice and tight.
The latch it's self that is fitted to the door is held on by another 6mm stainless nut and bolt and the receiver is pop rivioted to the ammo box.

Few pics showing latch

So other than a few small handles the door is complete, I am very happy the way it's turned out very strong and shuts and opens without fuss which is what you need when the box is hot.

I will be working on the legs next which I have started already as you will see in the first picture.

Had another go this morning.
Fitted wooden handles to the door catch and air flow wheel

I then cut the first leg just to make sure all was ok. I was a bit worried at first that it might not be stable enough but the leg is solid easy push fit and easy to remove and stores inside the box for transport.
The leg is fitted into a U channel I bolted to the bottom of the box the leg is 4.5" at the top and widening to 7" at the base and is 5" high.
Being 7" at the base gives it a larger footprint than the box it's self so making it stable.

Just got another leg to cut which is not easy with a hacksaw clean them both up smooth and that will be another part done.
Will get a few more pictures up once both legs are fitted.
My next job then is to shape and fit an internal mesh grid.

Happy with them they fit well and the whole unit is very stable. easy to fit and remove just push fit and they store inside just fine.

Next job is the chimney but got nothing here to do it at the moment so looking around for something suitable.
