I remember this from my dad who was captured by the Germans at Dunkirk

Take one very large and older the better marrow
Slice off the end and scoop out all the seeds
Suspend from a branch in an area of maximum sunshine
Pass through the bottom a wick and with the POWs the wick of choice was pajama cord
Place a container underneath the marrow
Full the marrow with rough brown sugar ( the only sugar they could get)
Sit back and wait
Keep topping up the sugar until the bottom container is full

The theory was that the natural sugars in the marrow turn to yeast the end result was a rough very alcoholic form of rum
