Well, as well as the woodland camping I have also been out in the canoe together with fellow inmate LOL.

We were lucky enough to be tipped off about a possible wild camp spot and so risked carrying a little bit more cooking gear and ‘real’ food than we normally take with us.

Despite a long walk from the car parking spot to the river it was worth the effort. The river is pretty weedy but we had planned it as a short paddle due to the forecast weather not being great so wasn’t too bad.

On arrival at our spot we set about setting up camp - me with my hammock and LOL in his pup tent.

Still early, we headed out for another paddle to scout some more of the river. It was at this point the heavens opened and we had to seek shelter under a willow tree.

Back to the camp spot and time for dinner - sautéed potatoes with spices, local butcher shop pork sausages and 5 bean mix in a spicy tomato sauce. Lovely. A great evening was spent and was further enhanced with a visit from ‘Simon, A Bloke In The Woods’. Top chap.

The next morning we cooked a traditional bannock cake with the recipe copied from the book ‘Song Of The Paddle’. This was served with New Zealand honey and was delicious - we both ate plenty even though we were still full from the previous evenings feast!

It was then a quick pack-up and back to the cars. Sadly I had to get home as we are in the process of moving and I still had lots to do.

Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Madriverrob - next time it’s set up I’ll get some more photos of the hammock set-up - but it’s nothing special. I’m slowly copying other peoples good ideas.

Bam - yes, it feels like being set free!

We're all learning as we go mate and evolving our set ups. Glad you're loving it.

Hi Banzai

That looked a great camp and very appetising meals!

I like your Canadian style canoe and the presumably higher payload than a kayak.

I understand you were busy at home, but what was the distance of the paddle? How do you find paddling with a single paddle?

Excellent really enjoyed reading that. We have Kayaks at home but dont get to use them like that.

Hi Gulfalan67,

This was a very short paddle - 0.6 mile. The walk to the river was 0.2 miles!

But we have done other camp trips where we’ve done 10 miles but for that’s about the comfortable limit for me in a day (fairly slow current, with or against. Obviously if you are paddling with a decent current, on The Wye for example, you can go further)

The payload can indeed be high but you just have to be careful about how many portages there are - so I still tend to try and keep things sensible, 20Kg ish.

Paddling a canoe I find pretty easy and very comfortable. I used to do a lot of kayaking and I think if you have the feel for ‘holding’ the water with the blade the rest just happens. It’s really just the first couple of strokes to get the canoe moving that are tricky.

Hope you get a chance to give it a try. If you are thinking about it check out the Song Of The Paddle forums - very useful info there.

Mike.

Thanks for sharing 👍🏻😁 when your viewing pictures like these it always seems (more out in the wilderness ) when a canoe is involved 😁
