Most of us carry first aid kits when camping but is what we carry enough for our needs and the needs of others?
So here are some little tips about what you can have in your kit that cost nothing or just a few pennies.
Cling film. Burns can be very serious and very painful and deep burns can very easily become infected when living in the wild.
Most of the pain is caused when air gets to the burnt area and to prevent this from happening cover the burn in a layer of cling film. This does two things, it excludes the air and also prevents any contamination from getting into the wound.
Large bottle tops of the sort you get on detergent bottles. Sounds a bit odd to carry bottle tops in a first aid kit But
Your mate is walking through the woods and trips and a broken tree brand penetrates his rib cage, he now has what we call a sucking wound which allows air into his chest which can collapse his lungs, Most of you who are versed in first aid know that you have to seal the wound to prevent air entering, this usually meant putting a piece of plastic or something similar over the wound and bandaging tightly but what happens if there is a piece of wood still in the wound? Well this is where the bottle top comes into play, place the bottle top over the puncture wound and bandage firmly, obviously its going to be the open part of the top over the puncture. This has a two fold effect, it will seal the wound once firmly bandaged into place and secondly it wont disturb any foreign body(s) that might be in the wound.
For a sucking wound to the chest you can of course use cling film to seal the puncture.
Incidentally the bottle top method has been proven to be very effective in the initial treatment for gunshot wounds on the battlefields in Ukraine

The bottle top is a new one to me joe 👍🏻
Its new to most people Mark but when you think about it it makes sense. There's a charity in Southampton who specialise in making up first aid kits for Ukraine and they all contain the large size bottle tops along with the usual bandages etc

Once it’s explained then it makes perfect sense joe , it’s not something I’ve thought about until now..
