Is It Safe?!

in the type of emergency I envisage survival rates will be quite low, i'm not really expecting to hear anything although my main radio is quite powerful, unlike most I expect to be on my own and surviving by my own wits.
I think we should do the best we can with what we have. If I have to spend money on prepping, I can think of better things to purchase than a ham radio.
Keith.

a ham radio is only any good if there is someone else on the other end, I cannot guarantee that will be the case in my situation, so that money I might have spent on a ham radio and lessons and licences will be better spent on stuff I actually need to survive.

That's why I'd opt for an HF receiver, rather than a transceiver... just to listen out. It's unlikely that we would need anything more than CB range for daily use/talk.

As the original post states “would it be safe.” Not.....is it what I need :D

Just keeping it on topic

which is why I have no intention of transmitting, just listening.

A don’t see anything wrong in that lone. My decision would not be based on fear of having one but on the benefits of one. So My answer would be yes it’s safe to have and use one all depending on situations and my knowledge of ham radios (which is not much lol)

listening is one thing, but transmitting is something else. if TPTB wanted to locate all the survivors, maybe to herd them into camps, this is how they would do it.

What emergency do you envisage/dream of that will lead to a low survival rate and how do you think you'll survive?

the main one is societal collapse.
the mortality rate in the big cities will be monumental.
but don't you bother Harry, I know your not a believer.

Hence the reason we disperse to wild and rural areas!

LOL! Before, ideally, after if we're too late.

Why do you think I am trying to get some meets together? Prior Planning........

" money I might have spent on a ham radio and lessons and licences will be better spent on stuff I actually need to survive"

We charge £30 for the course, test and includes your one off license fee, you'd have some discount as you’re a pensioner.
