A few weeks ago I asked the community a question , “ How light is lightweight?” It prompted some helpful comment and advice and led me to begin researching and organising a lightweight pack for myself .
The lightweight concept has its origins with US through hikers and as a general rule of thumb dictates a packed weight of no more than 20lbs ( or 9.1kg) . This is known as the base weight and excludes consumables ( food water and fuel ).
My base weight is currently at 17lbs ( or 7.7kg).
Food weight is accepted at 1.5 lbs ( or 700g) .
1litre of water weighs 2.2lbs or ( 1kg) .
Firstly , my worn clothing ( not included in base weight ).
