They do well off my fields, I leave the knapweed standing long after most have already cut their hay, I mainly do it for the bees but the painted ladies benefit. I've tried to introduce as much habitat for wildlife as I can.
They're only common until they're not.

I usually plant up a couple of patches of wild flowers round the veg gardens, they benefit the insects which in turn benefits me

I remember as a child seeing loads of Butterflies flitting around.
The favourite being the Peacock followed by the Tortoiseshell.
Don't see many about these days though........its a shame

Yep far to much un selective insecticides and weed killers being used Bill, flowering weeds are butterfly food

There is a great deal of habitat destroyed in the pursuit of neatness and low maintenance. Not many people have space to leave a host of nettles standing but they really benefit some species of butterfly.
