Heres a great little project i found on the interweb the other day - made one myself and its a great little lamp, fire lighter etc ..............
........................to make a small pocket lantern out of one of those small tiny whiskey bottles
First you need to cut a square strip of aluminium from any type of soda can and then roll it up like a tube and then measure it alongside the bottle. Important: It can't be longer nor too much shorter than the size of the bottle so you can push it inside and close the top when not using it and be able to pull it up easily when you need to use it. Then take any type of cotton cloth that will become the wick for this lantern, but make sure the material is "pure cotton" and doesn't contain any nylon material whatsoever or it won't work properly. Then stuff and run it through inside the aluminmum tube making sure it extends out both sides. Then fill the bottle with either kerosene, charcoal b-b-q lighter or zippo lighter fluid.
WARNING: Yea, you can use gasoline and other highly flamable stuff, but these three are much safer and less combustable.
Then stick the aluminum tube inside the bottle and allow the cloth / wick to become fully soaked making sure you don't have too much of it sticking out the top. Because the more that's sticking out the bigger the flame and the faster the fuel burns. But the shorter the wick, the smaller the flame and the more slowly the fuel burns. Make sense, don't it.
Then go ahead and light it, preferably outside first to make sure it works properly before taking it indoors and or packing it away in your survival kit, pack or BOB.
And then there you go, a pocket lantern. You can use this same method & technique with larger bottles too regardless if they are made out of plastic or glass.
