Just before Christmas, I left Wales behind, to bubble with a friend and her family in Oxon. Today I managed to get out for a wander, check out the local area.
Not far from where I'm staying, there is some land that used to be an old USAAF base.
The village of Berinsfield is on the site of RAF Mount Farm, a satellite of RAF Benson, initially used to train bomber pilots. It was later taken over by the United States Army Air Forces, who used it as a reconnaissance base. From here stars including Bob Hope, Dorothy Lamour and Glenn Miller took off to entertain the troops in Europe.
History lesson over back to the present day..........
The fields are full of young brassicas of some sort, and lots of pheasant and partridge.
There were about 10 roe deer does it this patch all legged it as I came round the corner
They don't show up in the photo but these trees were full of little brown birds about chaffinch size, beautiful song, as they flew away their breasts were a yellow green colour. All I could think of at the time was maybe siskin? But I have only ever seen drawings and never heard their song.
The patch of trees in the picture is known as the "Big Copse"
Smaller patch of evergreens to the left is known as the...... "Little Copse"
Little copse up closer
Horizon over Berinsfield, water tower to the right of the picture
Nice spot to stop for a bit
Carried my whole kit with me, just to keep in practice for when Covid does one.
Some crazy grinning idiot I found in the woods
spot the deer if you can
There she is
I went looking for the remains of the air raid shelter, but alas not yet. Back out tomorrow me thinks
