Thought I'd got rid of the rats but this morning there's a spud dug up and nibbled.

Pesky bloody rats. A good rat is a dead rat.
I'm going to challenge this as a over-generalisation. There are plenty of 'good' rats around. Dont you have native rats such as water rats in the UK? We have some wonderful arboreal species too.

Sorry about your spuds divebuddy!

Alan

Water rats are more accurately called water voles and are red list endangered because of poor water quality and invasive American brown mink.
Real rats can be divided into brown and black, brown being bigger and more suited to burrowing and living outdoors. Black rats are smaller and have almost hairless tail and ears, they’re more likely to live in buildings and above ground in cities.
Neither of them are good, they spread disease and cause damage.

As a teenager a local farmer paid us to kill rats living in grain barn; he didn’t tell us they were the size of a jack Russell and about three times as aggressive. Not easy trying reload a break barrel air rifle whilst running though knee deep grain in Wellington boots!
