hi everyone,
im in the process of aquiring my FAC licence for the first time as well as my shotgun licence. i shall be mainly doing pest control and clay shooting with occasional game bird shoots. such things as all small vermin and possibly foxes should they stray into my crosshairs! as such id very much appreciate what your opinions are on the matter; hints and tips for gaining the licence and then much more fun is the choice of rifle and shotgun you may think is best for my needs. also with the rifle in mind i will require a half decent scope and sound moderator any advice with those also would be greatly appreciated!
dont think id be going for a brand new setup as money is not endless!haha. around the 500 mark for a rifle i think would be a reasonable amount scope around 150 max and moderator ive not a clue haha.
anyways think thats enough from me and i look forward to reading your responses! :)

First question is do you have land that's cleared for the calibre that you have /are applying for?
If not you will be restricted to club shooting and have to go through their probationary period and range safety assessment. This is probably a good idea as the police are more likely to grant an fac to someone that has shown a knowledge of gun handling and safety. You will probably be granted a small rimfire (rf) on a closed ticket for starters and you will need to specific your quarry for each calibre.
You will need to specify a moderator on you application also.
A mate of mine has a cz in 17hmr and loves it.
I hope this helps for now, I'm sure that someone who actually nows what they're talking about will be along shortly.

Strewth. I'm just glad I live in France...

Just popping down the shops to buy a Mossberg 500 Tactical and a Mosin Nagant, or possibly a Remington 700 in .308, can't quite decide... :)

hey MT thanks for the advice certainly take it onboard! im thinking probably a .22lr or similar, definitely sound moderator is required dont want to scare off the rest of the bazzas or worry the neighbouring properties. as for the permission not sure whether it has been approved for firearms prior or not however im more than willing to take a walk with the necessary authorities :)
haha CH you make me laugh! love it. and im jealous of the lack of red tape and beaurocrasy over where you are! if there wasnt so many french people in france id be right there!haha ;)

I'll second that, in fact we got as far as going over to look over some properties.
Then all the banks started falling to bits so we put it on hold, daughter went to university and life happens...

well thats that, all forms filled in references sorted and permission sorted for FAC n shotgun application. sent off last tuesday special recorded delivery. fingers crossed now and just wait and see what comes of it! :) all being well be a positive outcome and ill be like a kid at xmas for what to go and get myself!haha.

Which calibres did you apply for, in the end? 22LR and 17HMR are fine for vermin & small game, but from what I've read, most UK police forces don't allow their use for fox, insisting on a heavier calibre. Even though 22LR and 17HMR are more than enough for Mr Renard with a well-placed headshot...

thanks MT and CH yup .22lr and .17hmr. not sure which makes and models yet but thatll be my gun porn once ive been approved and gained my licence all being well! just left a voicemail to the local firearms officer[well one of them] to see whether i should wait before bolting my gun cabinet to the wall or not prior to an officer coming to see the house and cabinet security as well as the interview etc.only have been a week since i sent it off tomorrow so not expecting miracles as id imagine theyre rather busy with renewals as well as the rest of their duties!bless em!haha. but yeh CH i was told by the local firearms dealer [also where i bought my air rifle] that the .17hmr is more than man enough and is fox rated calibre so hope thats the case with the D & C rozzers! :) id love to gain a big bore rifle in the future but id be more than happy with those two as a good base to work from until i can gain the calibre increase, aiming [pardon the pun] to go deer/big buck shooting/conservation/preservation what have you. task book of life an all that jazz! :)

England and Wales

For Muntjac and Chinese Water deer only- a rifle with a minimum calibre of not less than .220 inches and muzzle energy of not less than 1000 foot pounds and a bullet weight of not less than 50 grains may be used.
For all deer of any species – a minimum calibre of .240 and minimum muzzle energy of 1,700 foot pounds is the legal requirement.

Amazing. You need 59 fpe to kill a human being, but they insist on 1000-1700 fpe for a deer?!?

Yeah weird do you recall some years back a shooter up in Shropshire climbed a fence with a loaded 22lr had an ND up through his lower jaw killed him dead instantly, a through and through.Yet 22lr is only fit for small game rabbits etc makes you think ..........MiK

ScotlandFor roe deer, where the bullet must weigh at least 50 grains AND have a minimum muzzle velocity of 2,450 feet per second AND a minimum muzzle energy of 1,000 foot pounds may be used.
For all deer of any species – the bullet must weigh at least 100 grains AND have a minimum muzzle velocity of 2,450 feet per second AND a minimum muzzle energy of 1,750 foot pounds.

update to this thread, had the FAO come round and my interview went well, or at least that was the impression i got at least and both my references have been contacted. all thats left is to go and access my permission at the end of the month and fingers crossed ill be granted both my FAC and S/G certs! :) as for rifles i was thinking something like the savage 93R17 .17HMR? anyone have any experiance with these? also what sound mod and scope would be best suited? thanks in advance :)
