For cold weather you I've got a set of thinsulate and wool fingerless gloves which have a sort of mitten cap that folds down over them. Look a bit ridiculous but toasty warm.
I bought a pair of the brit army thick leather gloves on BcUK a while ago, i thought i'd lost em. But found em when sorting through my camping kit
Should be ideal for cold weather wear.
I have various gloves depending on the job I am doing.
Leather unlined gloves for general jobs handling wood etc
A set of thick welders gloves for messing around with the fire
and a pair of freezer gloves if I just need to keep my hands warm. These are quite thick and bulky but waterproof and very warm.

When its proper cold the Mitts take a bit of beating.......I think its a must to have a back up too.......I would never rely on just the one option....for obvious reasons.
Trying to work with cold hands is a difficult and unpleasant job.
