Spirit burners can be a problem to light in very cold conditions.
Having a means of preheating the burner saves the hassles of walking around with the burner in your pocket or stuffing it inside of your sleeping bag at night.
There are a few ideas on preheating............... and Trangia does make a specific tool for the job.
Had a look this morning at a way that would suit and came up with this.
I have a simmer plate that fits the burner to control the flame intensity.
It is ideal to use as a preheater along with a Tilley lamp wick.
With the Tilley wick inside of the simmer ring......add a few drops of Meths to the wick ( be sparing!) and away it goes.
Place the burner in the base over the wick.......a plate of some sort would be needed on snow for obvious reasons.
Not the best of pictures.....but it shows there is enough space between the burner and the wick for it to work.
A piece of any wick in a boot polish lid would work just as well.
Jobs a good'un.....happy with that
