I've still got some from a previous employer, I was a bit biased against them as to the hand they didn't feel like they'd be comfortable but when they're on your feet they're fine. I must admit, if I had to buy them I'd share your financial concerns but now I've tried them I'll not grudge replacing them.

If I'm kipping in them I do but thick woolly overstocks on, as you say, they're not overly toasty.
