So I managed to get away for the night on Saturday for my first ever solo overnight trip as my mate couldn’t make it because of work commitments, I must say there was an air of nervousness before going but actually I loved every single second of it. It was so peaceful and I really enjoyed having everything where I wanted it and how I wanted it and not have to worry about what anybody else wanted.

So I arrived about 1pm but talked to the owner about the place for a good 20 minutes who was a very friendly chap and really helpful as it was my first time there, after a short walk I entered the wood and followed the track as directed by the guy and passed a few other wild campers along the way, some dads with their sons which I thought was really nice. I eventually found my spot and was pleasantly surprised that my spot was miles away from anyone else and had a nice flat spot for setting up my shelter. I wanted to try a plow point shelter but also wanted it quite close to my fire for warmth so I opted to make a free standing plow point instead of attaching it to a tree, after about half an hour my home for the night was set and the wind was nicely behind my shelter.

After that was all done I thought I best get cracking with gathering as much fire wood as possible as it was about half 2 and I only had a couple of hours of light left and didn’t want to be rummaging for firewood in the dark, along the way I managed to find some birch bark and paper bark for starting my fire. After about an hour and a half I reckoned I had enough wood to see me through, I had processed all this into the correct sizes and was all ready to rock and roll.

Got everything set up but wanted to wait a while until it started to really come in dark as I was quite warm and didn’t want to unnecessarily waste wood.

Managed to get the fire going after getting seriously frustrated with my fire steel as it is too short and utterly crap, so before my next trip I need to sort that out. Anyway once it was going it was a nice hot raging fire which cheered me up instantly 😂

Once it started getting dark my camp looked at its best, seriously cozy

Then it was just a case of sitting back and enjoying some music while I waited to get a nice bed of coals to cook my Aberdeen Angus steaks. So got a brew on the boil while I waited👍🏻

Finally it was time to get the steaks on as the fire was perfect, I also fried off some red onions, garlic and red pepper with one full birds eye chilli all cooked in coconut oil, I also had a sun blushed tomato and garlic flat bread on the side 😂

After smashing my dinner I was stuffed so had to wait a while to have dessert so just got cleaned up and tidied around to get myself back in some kind of order but then was rewarded with this 😂

A melt in the middle steamed chocolate pudding with double cream, it was sooooo good. After I finished that and relaxed for a little while, listening to about 5 owls all going for it at once it was time to get settled on my bed with a couple of rum and cokes to warm my belly before sleep time, rum is my favourite tipple, I just love it 😂

This was the view from my bed, just perfect.

I slept from about half 11 till about 4am where I was spat out for a pee, god help anyone that might have seen me, stood there in my long johns and walking boots against a tree 😂 oh well it is what it is. It was so peaceful at that time of night.

I went back to sleep and woke up around 8 and slowly got packed away and headed off home. I really really enjoyed myself and feel revived and utterly and totally content after a nice relaxing night out in the woods, no better place to be for me

Brilliant mate, glad you enjoyed it. While I prefer a social camp with a mate, there's a lot to be said for going on your own too, as you say, you do what you want, when you want. I find it really relaxing just watching the fire with a wee drink.

Looks like you had a good set up and those steaks look braw. Its addictive this camping lark isn't it. :)
