Used to do all my tooling before dyeing Mark......and before any assembly.....individual pieces

Looking good:)

cheers mate, one hell ov a build, few mistakes been made lol, have realised that I really enjoy bevelling the edges, very satisfying 😁 burnishing the edges are a bugger eh lol

Was thinking it was to late right enough, there not glued together tho, still individual pieces just placed together at the moment.

Like the way you have recessed the sheath to fit the Bolster, looks good.

It is still possible to get some tooling done Mark......if nothing is glued together
The risk being.....that now you have stained the leather.....if you dampen it for tooling you MAY get water stains in the leather when it dries......best to dampen ALL pieces so they kind of match when they dry.
Water stains...IF...they occur can be attractive and add to the look of the piece.....individual choice.
Maybe best to use a scrap piece of the leather you are using for the build.....stain it....let it dry and then have a go at the tooling.....see how you feel from there.

Burnishing the leather can be awkward if stacking several pieces.....dampen the edges to be burnished......then apply "Gumtragacanth" sparingly to the dampened edges with the tip of your finger....should help a lot getting the finish you want.......start slow and light pressure.....when the fibres start to lay down increase the speed and add a bit more pressure:thumbsup:
Take care not to get any on the face of any work.....it can stain.....work cleanly
When you have burnished....leave to dry.....then do it again if its needed.

Yes....bevelling the edges does feel and sound good :D having all of those tools sharp helps enormously and makes it a pleasure to use them.
A "Quality" skill knife is a must.....I used to use a Stanly knife for most cutting.......you can strop the blades while still in the knife and produce clean and accurate cuts.....more control too.

The sheath is looking very good Mark......nice job......looking forward to seeing it finished and buffed up with some Aussie finish :)

Tidy work mate.....your friend will be well happy.

Hi Mark.

This is the exact knife I used to use.

Comfortable to use and gives good control when cutting.....especially when using the thicker leathers........saves a fortune on buying new blades for the snap off versions as you can strop the blades......before.....during....and after use.......safer to use as well.

Worth the investment mate.

Thanks bill 😁

cheers for the tips mucker, the gumtragacanth was my next question πŸ˜‚ re the sharpening, aye that’s something I wasn’t looking forward to as you know lol but I did strop the bevelling tool before I used it on the edge of my strop board and on the face, noticed a slight difference on the pressure required to cut, after this project, sharpening the tools will be the next thing...... have to say tho, you did take care of them bill, still sharp πŸ‘πŸ»

First makers mark. Decided to not tool a pattern onto the sheath, seems mad to ruin the sheath with my first attempt at tooling.
