Joe, Bacon Grill £1 a can in Tesco.

If your not hiking, you on a camp site then you can pretty well take whatever you fancy. If your taking fresh chicken and or sausage then freeze them at home and pack when your leaving the house. Quick meals are the likes of noodles, cook and add a can of Tuna, cheats stew = can of stewed beef+can of spuds+can of mxed veg all in the pot and you have a stew in a few mins. Pita bread or wraps are great, stuff them with all sorts, cheese, ham, burgers etc and a bit of salad with it. Make a spag bol at home, freeze it and take to camp, same with a curry.

+1 on ration packs, you don't need to take anything else with you

I like the idea of the 24 hour packs but they seem expensive? Is it worth the price for what you get?
 
Baytree, you've kind of brought up something that I was going to ask, has anyone used a dutch oven to do a Fray Bentos ??? I keep meaning to do it for a test but if any of you brave scranateers have alreaady done it I'd be keen to know the results.

Hmmm not though of that , but I have a Dutch oven and a fray bentos at home , might give it a go over the weekend .......

It should work but keep it right on the edge of the fire and turn the oven a few degrees every few minutes to ensure an even cook

I keep meaning to try it too, might give it a go this weekend in the back garden, weather and wife permitting.
 
We've used an upturned iron cauldron as an impromptu Dutch oven on occasions and have a purpose made bread oven which is essentially a steel box rendered on the outside and with loose blocks inside to serve as a heat sink. Here's a picture of it taken off the internet Portable bread oven the cart has since gone to the big field in the sky and the oven only comes out rarely simply because of logistics in transporting it. We've cooked all sorts of things in it. Obviously bread but we've also done whole ducks , chickens and joints , vegetables and pies although alas we' be never tried a fray bentospudding . It seemed to cook meat pretty well being slower and longer. One thing wewould do ( sorrry I keep saying we when I really should have said Elaine the cook) would be to cook an evening meal and while we were eating it Elaine would stick a custard pie into the cooling oven so it would be cooked and warm for pudding.
Working on building sites in the winter we would sometimes have a baby burco boiler for tea and we soon discovered that an aluminium pan of water placed on top would thoughly heat any tin put into it in the three hours or so between breakfast and lunch.
Which is all a long winded way of saying yes I should think it would be possible to do a fray bentos pudding in a Dutch oven.
 
Going ever so slightly off topic, but funny.
Camping with the girls from Uni a few years ago, we take it in turn to provide the nights meal. One of our more, shall we say common sensically challenged had a turn. She triumphantly pulled out 4 Fray Bentos S&K pies...... Well apparently we did all like them in halls. After groans, and lots of wine we had a plan. Ditch the tin, put all the filling in one billy to boil, we then fried the pastry lids. Can't honestly remember if it was any good or not. White wine played havoc with my memory that night. But none of us were ill.:rofl::rofl:

Rat packs are not expensive when you look at what you get.

tea, coffee, hot choc, whitener, sports drink

Boil in the bag brekkie, lunch, dinner

Energy bars, sweets, other nibbles, Tabasco sauce in some, peanut butter, biscuits and bits and bobs
 
Ref ration packs then it depends what you are going to do; as Harry said everything is in the box but it would be cheaper to buy a box of of tips and take a few in a plastic bag.

To buy 3/4 boil in the bag meals would probably cost more but do you need them if you’re carrying a tin of bacon grill and a loaf of bread.

They are also heavy and bulky if you are away for more than one day when dehydrated options may be better. The final point is that they are very strictly controlled within the army; who ever you are buying them of may have an interesting story of how they acquired them and when a batch gets recalled because of a discovery of contamination/early going off (which happens more than you’d think) etc no one is going to let you know about

" The final point is that they are very strictly controlled within the army" These days the MOD do get rid of surplus packs onto the retail market I'm told and recently gave a lot of the ten man packs to food banks.

I've eaten a lot of rat packs over the years and keep some in prep storage but these days I enjoy cooking fresh where I can and if and when I actually get away; still health is improving and I'm eating like a horse, I need to gain around 10kg and exercise.
 
It's one of those "anorak" forums as my friends and I call them where some have a really in depth knowledge almost to the point of obsession but yes there are some interesting treads on there. There are some on therre that have posted reviews of wartime rations they have tried and pertaining to some earlier comments albeit with an American angle there's a thread about possible legal action for importing foreign MRE's into the US.
 
Steve1989 is on MREinfo a lot and does some fantastic youtube videos with rations from all over the world and all ages...how he eats some really old stuff LOL


New to me, single meal rat pack :) and yes, I'm a happy member over on that forum :cool:
